Parashat BO - Redemption and Covenant

This Shabbat, we enter the powerful and transformative portion of Parashat Bo, where we witness the final blows against Egypt, culminating in the most decisive act of divine deliverance—the Exodus. This is not merely a historical event; it is a prophetic declaration of freedom, redemption, and covenant.

The Torah portion recounts the last three plagues: locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn. With each plague, Pharaoh’s heart remains hardened, yet God’s purpose is unwavering—His people will be freed. In Exodus 12:2, the Lord establishes a new beginning:

“This month shall be unto you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” (Exodus 12:2)

This is not just a shift in the calendar; it marks the rebirth of a nation. Similarly, when we come into covenant with Yeshua HaMashiach, we are given a new beginning, a new identity, and a new destiny. As Paul writes:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Messiah, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

At the heart of this parashah is the institution of Passover (Pesach)—God’s instruction to take an unblemished lamb, apply its blood to the doorposts, and be spared from death. The blood was a sign of redemption:

“And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.”(Exodus 12:13)

For us as believers, this foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Yeshua, the spotless Lamb of God, whose blood redeems us from sin and death. John 19:36 directly connects Yeshua to the Passover Lamb:

“For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, ‘Not one of His bones shall be broken.’”

Just as the Israelites were freed from the bondage of Egypt, so too are we freed from the bondage of sin through the blood of Messiah.

Haftarah: A Promise in the Midst of Judgment

The Haftarah from Jeremiah 46:13-28 echoes the theme of deliverance, but this time, it is not about Egypt’s fall—it is about Israel’s hope. Egypt, once a symbol of power, is warned of impending destruction. Yet, in the midst of judgment, God speaks a tender promise to Israel:

“But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity… for I am with thee.” (Jeremiah 46:27-28)

This is a message of assurance—even when nations fall and darkness looms, God remains faithful to His covenant people.

In today’s world, uncertainty surrounds us—wars, economic struggles, moral decay. Yet, just as God preserved Israel, He preserves those who trust in Him. No matter what we face, we are never alone. He declares:

“I am with thee.”

This is the heartbeat of our faith—God’s enduring presence, His unshakable covenant.

Brit Chadashah: The Fulfillment of Redemption

In the New Covenant, Paul makes a striking connection:

“For even Messiah our Passover is sacrificed for us.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)

The Exodus was not just about Israel’s physical freedom—it pointed to the greater redemption found in Yeshua. Just as the Israelites were commanded to remove all leaven (chametz) from their homes before Passover, Paul exhorts us:

“Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)

Leaven represents sin, corruption, and pride. As we reflect on this portion, we must ask ourselves: What is the leaven in my life that needs to be removed? What chains still hold me back from fully walking in God’s calling?

A Message for Today: Walking in the Light of Redemption

One of the final plagues was darkness—a tangible, consuming darkness that covered Egypt for three days. Yet, in the homes of the Israelites, there was light:

“They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.” (Exodus 10:23)

This is profoundly prophetic. We live in a time where spiritual darkness is increasing. Morality is being redefined, truth is being blurred, and many feel lost. But for those who belong to Yeshua, there is light. He declared:

“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

As we approach the final redemption, we are called to be that light in the darkness. We must be the ones who hold fast to truth, who walk in faith, and who proclaim the hope of Messiah to a world desperate for salvation.

Embracing the Covenant of Freedom

Parashat Bo is not just a historical recounting—it is our story. The same God who delivered Israel from Egypt is the God who delivers us today. The same blood that marked the doorposts in Egypt is the blood of Yeshua that covers our lives. The same promise of protection in Jeremiah is the assurance we have in Him today.

“And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the Lord did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.” (Exodus 13:8)

This is a command to remember and declare God’s faithfulness. Let us not only remember but also live as people who have been redeemed, walking boldly in the light of Messiah, proclaiming His truth to all who will hear.

This week, as we meditate on Parashat Bo, may we:

✅ Remove the leaven from our lives

✅ Trust in the blood of the Lamb

✅ Walk in the light amidst darkness

✅ Proclaim the message of redemption

May we go forward with courage, knowing that the God of Israel is with us, and Yeshua is our Redeemer!

Shabbat Shalom!

Matzileinu is a Hebrew PRAYER that means "deliver us." It appears in the Passover Haggadah twice.

Matzileinu is part of "Ve'hi She'amdah", which appears in the Passover Haggadah, which translates to "In every generation, adversaries stand against us seeking to destroy us, but the Holy One saves us from their hands".
